It’s that time of year again when the country comes alive to host the biggest event of the year – the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix – and 2016 is set to be another thrilling race weekend…
BIC, the home of motorsport in the Middle East, will play host to the mega event that will be the 12th edition of F1’s only desert race and will mark the second round of this year’s FIA Formula 1 World Championship. The 2016 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix will be the third successive year that the action will be taking place at sunset under BIC’s stateof- the-art track lighting system, which will make for a spectacle that is unique to the F1 calendar.
Sherif Al Mahdy, BIC Commercial Director, said: “The 2016 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix is right around the corner, and it is our time to shine once again. “All eyes will be on the Kingdom of Bahrain in just a few weeks, and we are extremely excited to be hosting yet another memorable weekend for all the fans who will be joining us here at BIC, as well as for the millions watching on live television around the world,” he continued.
“Over the past two years, we enjoyed a pair of epic night races that were both thrilling from start to finish. That has inspired our slogan for this year’s Grand Prix, “On the Edge of Action”, and we look forward to even more thrills this year.”
On Friday, April 1, Practice One kicks off the weekend’s action from 2pm to 3.30pm, and then Practice Two will be held under floodlights from 6pm to 7.30pm. Qualifying on Saturday, April 2, will start at the same time, while an hour-long Third Practice session will be held from 3pm to 4pm. The 57-lap Bahrain Grand Prix is scheduled to flag off at 6pm on Sunday, April 3. Ahmed Janahi, Gulf Air A/Chief Commercial Officer.
“Gulf Air has been the Title Sponsor of the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix ever since it made history as the first Formula 1 Grand Prix to be held in the Middle Eas,t in 2004. “In its twelfth year now, we are delighted to continue working alongside Bahrain International Circuit, as we serve the Kingdom of Bahrain, support its ongoing economic growth and strive to raise awareness of the many attractions Bahrain has to offer,” he added.
All 11 F1 teams will be vying for a coveted place on the podium, including world champions Mercedes and the talented pairing of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Returning to provide a stiff challenge will be Ferrari rivals Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, and McLaren veterans Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button, all of whom are former world champions.
Global megastar Avicii, known for his worldwide hits Wake Me Up and Hey Brother, will headline a star-studded line-up of world-class artists during the F1 weekend. Avicii joins superstar DJs Axwell Λ Ingrosso and reggae royalty Jimmy Cliff, who will also take to the stage to wow the F1 crowds. Sherif Al Mahdy added: “We at BIC are absolutely delighted to have added an artist of Avicii’s calibre to our line-up of entertainers at this year’s Bahrain Grand Prix. He is truly an international star; a household name that resonates with all music lovers today.
“You know you have reached a certain level of greatness and popularity when you can be identified in your industry by just one name: in F1, there is Senna, Schumacher, Vettel; in football, we have Pele, Ronaldo, Messi; in golf, there is Tiger; and in dance music, there is Avicii,” he said. “The Bahrain Grand Prix is where the worlds of F1 and entertainment come together for a superb show. With all these world-class artists signed up, I can confidently say that BIC has put together the most exciting line-up of performers ever assembled for our race weekend. We look forward to the fans having a great time with us throughout the event.”
Internationally renowned reggae legend Jimmy Cliff will be the opening act on Friday, April 1. He will hit the stage directly after F1 Practice Two. His show will be followed by electronic dance duo Axwell Λ Ingrosso. The outset of 2016 saw the duo release instrumental single Dream Bigger, having ended 2015 with Billboard’s #1 dance track of the year courtesy of hit single Something New. That paves the way for Avicii’s live performance on the evening of April 2, the Saturday of the race weekend, straight after F1 Qualifying.
In a first ever, BIC will also host a Thursday Night Concert on March 31, ahead of the race weekend. The line-up is set to be announced very soon. This year’s line-up of artists continues BIC’s tradition of signing only the world’s best to be a part of an all-encompassing entertainment package at the annual F1 extravaganza. BIC has much planned to enjoy off the track for the whole family, and for people of all ages. Part of the public entertainment available at the F1 Village vending area will include the theatre shows, trapeze shows, children’s workshops and roaming acts. Furthermore, a fully interactive F1 Fan Zone will be on hand, giving fans an exciting insight into the sport.
