With views that would make you forget about your worries, and rooms that will leave you relaxed amid city life, Meliá Vienna goes beyond your ordinary European hotel experience. FACT stayed in Austria’s tallest skyscraper in Danube City, and here’s the verdict…
A 20-minute drive from the airport and you’ll arrive at the soaring building that is the Meliá Vienna. Its location, right besides the banks of the Danube River, in the upcoming business district, gives it a trendy setting, as later, we also find that the city’s after-work and cool crowd frequent the chic dining spots inside the hotel. Having stayed at a number of Meliá hotels before, there is one thing that stands out; every property pays homage to the place in which it’s located. In Madrid, it’s the stunning historical building with a reputed past; in Croatia, it’s the sprawling seafront estate giving a nod to nature; and in Jamaica, it’s the picturesque resort reminiscent of colonial architecture.
Now, in Vienna, the Meliá brand has surpassed its own boundaries by going for a few firsts, giving the Austrian capital and, in fact, the country, it’s tallest skyscraper, but also the first sustainable or Green Building, known locally as Donau-City Tower 1. The 250-metre high, 60-floor building, designed by French star architect Dominique Perrault, is a modern monolith that embodies everything you could want from contemporary accommodation. The exterior offers a glazed, clearly structured, minimalistic façade resembling a geometric waterfall with a breaking edge directed towards the city.
When you enter the lobby to check-in, you’ll immediately get the urge to whip out your smartphone and snap a few pictures of the beautiful floating spiral staircase that connects three floors between the reception, Flow restaurant, and the Grand Ballroom called Golden Wave. For us, check in was smooth and quick, and we whizzed up to our home for the next few days – a Premium Guestroom.
As far as mod-cons go, Meliá Vienna ticks all the boxes if you’re looking for comfort with contemporary class. The hotel’s 253 rooms and 27 suites are located between the 4th and the 15th floors, all of which boast floor-toceiling windows with integrated elements that can be opened.
Design-led furnishings offer maximum comfort, complemented by cutting edge= technology. Key room features include king-size DreaMax mattresses, complimentary Wi-Fi, desks with full AV connectivity, large ultra-slim LED IP TVs, media hub HD stations, Nespresso coffee machines, laptop-sized safes, rain showers, and individually adjustable air conditioning. Attention to detail is next to none here. The interior features make visual reference to the waterfall motif, with geometric shapes present in the bedheads, bathroom walls, and stone tiles – just beautiful!
The Premium Guestroom was one of pure relaxation. Ranging from 34 to 43sqm, this room type features a sitting area, superior quality beds and linen, a rain shower, bathtub (in most rooms) and premium amenities. This is a perfect room choice for couples, groups of friends and solo travellers who will be spending most of their time out exploring Vienna and using their room as a sanctuary for respite and rest throughout their stay. The beds are super comfortable, the bathroom is large and there’s plenty of storage. Some of our favourite things about the room included the heated flooring in the bathroom, the complimentary mini bar and Nespresso machine and, of course, the glorious views over the River Danube on one side and the surrounding area on the other. We’d recommend at least one chill-out evening where you can slip into the comfy robes and watch the sun go down from your room.
For families and those who want a completely luxurious getaway, we’d highly recommend the 89sqm Master Suite which, not only offers the best views over the Danube River, but also has a separate living room area with a dining table for up to four people offering a perfect in room dining experience as well as being ideal for entertaining and executive meetings. Here, the indulgent bath tub, surround sound system and a range of premium amenities, really make this a special choice of accommodation.
A huge draw of Meliá Vienna is its dining outlets; there’s Flow Restaurant & Bar which is perfect for experiencing the best of Viennese coffee culture and an array of local dishes, as well as enjoying cocktails in a casual and relaxed atmosphere. This is also where an abundant international breakfast buffet is served with plenty of tasty dishes to start the day. The standout, and what we’d call the star of the property, has to be 57 Restaurant and Lounge. Taking prime position on the hotel’s 57th floor, it offers a great choice of Mediterranean and International dishes at the highest point in Austria – trust us, the views are utterly spectacular.
The perfect evening would start off in the chic 57 Restaurant, where you can choose your vino out of a wide selection of Austrian and Spanish offerings, or try one of the thirst-quenching cocktails, mocktails or juices. Remember, this is a beautiful, modern venue so do dress appropriately! What we loved about the menu is that the culinary team makes use of seasonal produce and stays true to the flavours of their ingredients. During our visit, we tucked into a mouthwatering Sea Bass on Wild Garlic Risotto – divine! The service was fabulous as was the ambience. Continue the night at the highest hot spot in Austria (220m) in the 57 Lounge rooftop bar. Explore the wide variety of drinks and dance to the beats of the DJs at the weekend.
Meliá Vienna has it all. The character and class of a trendy brand, great rooms, excellent food, and the friendliest staff. The concierge was incredibly helpful on our trip, recommending places to visit as well as giving us a marked map so we would have no trouble getting around. The location of the hotel is fantastic; a two-minute walk from the U1 metro which will have you in the city centre in mere minutes. An impeccable base from which to explore this charming city
