“The two things you can’t fake are good food and good music.” – Etta James. There are many places to eat out in Doha. Plenty of which offer great menus boasting an array of options and flavoursome dishes. What is more limited however, are great locations to eat whilst being entertained by a wonderful live band. The Jazz Club at the Oryx Rotana Doha is offering just this. With a scrumptious menu and a live act imported from the shores of South Africa, an enjoyable evening is a given. In an effort to keep the entertainment fresh, the venue brings in a new band almost every three months.

We were eager to experience this dining venue, and said yes to the delightful invitation which promised a fun evening ahead. As we made our way through the entrance, we were already captivated by the crisp sound of the performers on stage. Being seated where we were sure to have a great view of the band, we ordered beverages and the house salad, otherwise known as the jazzy salad.

Black Velvet are the six piece, versatile jazz band whose turn it is to excite and entertain Doha this time around. The talented musicians integrate various genres to form a unique sound of their own. Tapping into both old school and the new, they showcase their impressive instrumental and vocal abilities. A real treat for the ears. With the stage set and the background music flowing, it was time to taste the menu. The jazzy salad turned out to be just what you want from a salad. A fresh musculan mix with cherry tomato, avocado and baby mozzarella. This is topped off with bread crostini and a balsamic vinegar dressing. We had two helpings , and we’re not afraid to admit it.

We were to sample not one, but two steaks next. The Australian black angus tenderloin and the Australian black angus rib eye. Both were requested medium and were delivered so. Succulent cuts of meat are what met the palate, complete with soft mashed potato and mushrooms. We sampled the mushroom and creamy peppercorn sauces and both proved to be excellent steak companions. Roasted eggplant and peppers complimented the tasty ensemble. The culinary team certainly knew what they were doing!

Lastly, deep friend ice-cream! Whilst we were still pondering the science behind this concept, a large rounded helping of smooth ice cream covered in a sweet batter was produced, topped with freshly cut strawberries. We soon forgot about how they make it and focussed on why we don’t have deep fried ice cream more often. A great way to end a superb meal. Leaving the venue, we were pleased to learn that Black Velvet will be performing at the Jazz Club for a few more weeks to come, so you still have time to enjoy this amazing offering from Oryx Rotana Doha.
