The 19th edition of the Spring of Culture (SOC) festival is in full swing, celebrating art and culture with spectacular shows, exhibits and activities. Running until the end of the month, don’t forget to mark your calendars to soak in every last bit of this cultural extravaganza.

For the next four weeks, enjoy a captivating programme of cultural activities every Saturday at the Post Office Museum. Suitable for all ages, the series invites visitors to rediscover Manama’s rich heritage, exploring its historic landmarks, souqs and old neighbourhoods. The museum’s scenic balcony will also feature an open café offering a relaxed spot to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.

What: On The Edge of a Crushing Cliff – Hussein Al Mohasen

Using texture and vibrant colours to create a palpable geographic landscape, Hussein Al Mohasen’s latest exhibition offers a fresh perspective on themes of peace and humanity, as he explores the relationship between cerebral experiences and poetic language.

Enjoy an evening of nostalgia and head back to the ‘90s with the iconic voice of renowned singer, actor and songwriter, Khalid Abdulrahman, also known as ‘Night Dweller’. The event, suitable for eight years and above, will be headlined by Ayed Yousef, whose hit songs – Ahat, Sarihini, Sudiqini, Khuberooh, Tedhkar and Al-ata – have left an indelible mark on the region’s music.

Bringing together artists, creatives, youth and families, this weekend event highlights emerging talent, providing them a platform to showcase their work through an art and design market, exhibitions and open mic performance opportunities.

What: Photos À La Chair

Founded in 2017, Photos à la Chair is a monthly public art gathering that brings art and community together in a public setting. Organised by Camille Zakharia and Ali Karimi, the event features a three-hour photoshoot, with each session featuring a different artist, location and bench. Over the past seven years, Photos à la Chair has held 24 sessions with over 100 collaborators and more than 1,000 attendees. Suitable for eight years and above.

The King of Waltz, André Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra, are once again set to return to Bahrain. Joined by 300 dancers, spinning, twirling and waltzing to the beautiful, melancholic The Second Waltz, the Dutch maestro and violinist’s performance is sure to dazzle audiences at this special event. Suitable for eight years and above.

The Folk Art Space presents Klay Kassam, an exhibition showcasing the fusion of Egyptian tradition with modern abstract expression. Drawing inspiration from Egypt’s rich visual heritage, the exhibit’s vibrant compositions offer a unique visual experience. Suitable for all ages.

What: The Artist Books of Rafa Al Nasiri

This exhibition offers a poetic and visual journey that blends love, conflict and cultural memory. Through intricate artist books and mixed-media projects, Rafa Al Nasiri’s work explores themes of war, nostalgia and resistance, using calligraphy, collage and personal reflections, to engage viewers in a dialogue between art and literature.

Dubai-based French mezzo-soprano, Elinor Morel, presents an eclectic performance, blending opera classics with French and international hits, ending with Dalida’s Salma Ya Salama (Egyptian version). Known for her exceptional vocal technique and a passionate, vibrant temperament, she effortlessly switches between styles. She was awarded UAE Best French Opera-Pop Singer 2024 and UAE Best French Classical Singer & Songwriter 2023. Suitable for eight years and above.

What: Lorne Balfe, Top Gun: Maverick In Concert With The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra

In a first-of-its-kind experience in Bahrain, the score for Top Gun: Maverick will be performed live at the Bahrain National Theatre. The Academy Award-winning blockbuster film will be shown on a big screen, alongside a live symphony orchestra conducted by GRAMMY Award-winning, Emmy and BAFTA-nominated composer Lorne Balfe. Suitable for eight years and above.

GRAMMY Award winner, Arooj Aftab, presents her unique blend of electronic minimalism, South Asian folk tunes and jazz. With her 2021 album, Vulture Prince, dedicated to her late brother, Arooj became the first Pakistani artist to win a GRAMMY for her song Mohabbat. Suitable for eight years and above.

What: ‘From Hand To Hand’ 100-Years-New Craft

Featuring the works of five ‘Shokunin’ (Japanese master craftsmen from diverse disciplines), this exhibition highlights the exceptional quality of Japanese local crafts. It showcases the tradition of handmade artistry in Japan, from the Asahiyaki tea bowl, Kaikado tea caddy and Kutani yaki teacups, to woodcraft and tea strainers that bring the art of tea-making to life. ✤
