In Bahrain, we’re not just celebrating World Environment Day, on June 5; thanks to Dr Anamica Bhattacharya, we can look forward to a whole month of eco action.

The United Nations celebrates June 5 as World Environment Day to encourage awareness and action towards protection of the environment. And taking this action a step further, Dr Anamica Bhattacharya, who is a freelance educator, nature enthusiast, artist, homemaker and a dedicated mum, is launching the Environmental Awareness Campaign – 2021 Bahrain in conjunction with Srinkhala, an online community of people connecting through arts, for the entire month of June 2021.

The campaign will have interactive sessions on digital platforms on subjects such as waste management, recycling, nutrition, art, gardening and special projects. The focus will be on the importance of protecting nature and its resources.

The inaugural session will be on June 5 at 6pm with a talk on minimalism by Kai Miethig, who is the founder of W-AI-STE, wastepreneur, ecopreneuer, inspirpreneur, edutainer and conference speaker on environmental awareness. Kai believes: “If we take care of nature, nature will take care of us.”

Till June 30, every Monday and Thursday from 4pm to 6pm, there will be workshops and activities to promote action towards environmental protection. Dr Anamica says: “Anyone can join this campaign for free, provided they plant a tree or send the one you want to plant to us. We will do it for you.”

The campaign will address topics like waste management at home, plastic waste recycling, nature and its glory through art workshops, crafts such as making paper and upcycled cloth bags, recycling plastic bottles to make plant holders, saving plants in the harsh desert summers, identifying and saving medicinal plants in Bahrain and building bird houses. The campaign will also hold an Eco Champion Contest the details of which will follow later. And attendance at events is open to all age groups. Children above five years are welcome too, for workshops.
