To Paradise
By Hanya Yanagihara

A bold novel that explores themes of love, fear and the dream of utopia. Divided into three time periods and exploring the lives of three couples, the book starts in an imagined version of 1893 New York where an heir of a notable family drifts towards the beckoning melodies of a music teacher, despite an arranged union to a suitor. Jumping to 1993 Manhattan, a young Hawaiian is troubled by a failed partnership with an older and richer man, unable to disclose their true feelings and past trauma. And lastly, in 2093, a time rocked by countless illnesses and totalitarian regimes, the granddaughter of a famous scientist attempts to manoeuvre through her life in his absence as well as solve the mystery behind her husband’s disappearances. Though the three tales differ, they are seamlessly entwined.

Nora Stephens, a literary agent, breathes books. Uninterested in the archetypal vision of romance and far from a blushing damsel, careerdriven and hardworking Nora is dedicated to her clients, as well as her little sister Libby, who begs her to go with her to Sunshine Falls, to which she reluctantly agrees. Having gone through her fair share of breakups and being dumped by men, Nora is both desirous and afraid of love. Far from having the small-town love connection she was hoping for, she keeps bumping into her nemesis Charlie Lastra, a hard-nosed editor from back in the city. The two are thrown together repeatedly and are surprised to find how much they have in common beyond books. Before either knows what’s happening, they’ve fallen for each other. Funny, fresh, full of life, this novel is a must-read for any true romcom lover.
