Historic Haul
The 2024 Paris Olympics saw Bahrain make history as the kingdom’s athletes won four medals, including two golds, a silver and a bronze – the country’s best-ever showing at the Games.
That also meant that Bahrain led the field among Arab nations in the final medals tally, finished sixth among Asian countries and achieved their best position on the overall list of 204 participating nations with a 33rd place finish.
This improved upon the team’s 77th place showing at Tokyo 2020 as well as Rio 2016 (48th) and London 2012 (50th).
The Bahraini athletes’ outstanding achievements earned them royal praise from His Majesty King Hamad who commended their performance as he met with His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, at Sakhir Palace on the final day of the Olympics.
The two gold medals were won by star runner Winfred Yavi, who triumphed in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase, setting a new Olympic record in the process, and formidable wrestler Akhmed Tazhudinov who won the men’s freestyle wrestling 97kg competition.
Meanwhile, Salwa Eid Naser took home the silver medal in the women’s 400 metres with her personal best time of the season and Gor Minasyan clinched the bronze in the men’s over-102kg weightlifting competition.
His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa and His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa witnessed history unfold in Paris and both congratulated the victorious athletes in person.
And the medallists received a heroes’welcome when they returned to Bahrain with HRH Prince Salman receiving and congratulating them personally at a reception at Sakhir Air Base.
With the four medals won at Paris 2024, Bahrain now has eight medals in total at the Olympics: four gold, three silver, and one bronze.
