FACT spent the day in the new HONGQI HS5, a deluxe compact crossover SUV, showcasing all the bells and whistles.

HONGQI is a Chinese luxury car marque, now established in more than a dozen foreign countries. Its determination to change the public perception of Chinese luxury and establish itself amongst the most prestigious automotive brands in the world, is made clear through every new model it releases.

In recent years, thanks to the team at Zayani Motors, FACT has had the opportunity to test drive a variety of HONGQI’s offerings, including the H9, the HS3 and the Ousado. Having been thoroughly impressed by what this brand has accomplished in the past, we had high hopes for its latest creation.

Bold & Beautiful Exterior

As the new HS5 came into view, we were instantly reminded why we were so impressed with HONGQI during our previous encounters with the brand, as we were again greeted by the visually stunning ‘Wings of HONGQI’ light carpet.

As we absorbed the exterior head-on, we admired the 2025 model’s prominent waterfall chrome grille, featuring eight vertical chrome lines and an active grille shutter. Sleekly designed LED headlights, daytime running lights and front fog lamps bestow the vehicle with a refreshed face, while the chrome red stripe that is HONGQI’s emblem flows down the centre of the bonnet and through the middle of the grille.

The fancy flanks feature body-coloured, power-folding, movable side mirrors with integrated turn signals and 20-inch light alloy wheels. We also found the body-coloured integrated door handles to add a further touch of class. Bold exterior lines and subtle chrome elements have been included around the body, adding to the car’s grand appearance.

Once at the rear, we appreciated the LED taillight strip that stretches horizontally and features an underscoring chrome accent, emphasising the vehicle’s wide stance. The integrated roof spoiler with brake light and dual exhaust system contribute to creating truly handsome hindquarters.

Lavish Interior

Lucky enough to be inspecting the HONGQI HS5 Deluxe 2WD model, we were welcomed by a spacious and luxurious interior.

The Nappa leather and Alcantara seating throughout proved exceptionally comfortable and supportive. The driver’s 12-way adjustable seat has memory function and both front seats provide ventilation.

We loved how the multifunctional leather steering wheel felt in hand and its position memory feature. Additionally, Carbon Fiber trim accents and soft-touch materials are present throughout the cabin.

The rear seating offers plenty of leg, shoulder and head room, with rear seat backrests offering 4/6 reclining for extra comfort. A generous luggage compartment adds to the practical nature of this premium SUV.

HONGQI has included ambient interior lighting that offers 253 Indoor Mood Lighting options. Combined with the dual-zone automatic climate control and the panoramic sunroof, the designers have ensured a relaxing and comfortable 24-hour interior environment.

Updated Infotainment & Technology

Once we shifted our attention to the in-car tech, the new model truly began to shine.

The latest HONGQI HS5 boasts an updated infotainment system that is clean and minimalistic. A 12.3-inch, high-quality LCD screen and a 12.3-inch central control panel have been masterfully integrated into the car’s classy cockpit. We used this system throughout the day and found it compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It also proved intuitive and easy to navigate, providing us with complete control over the vehicle’s extensive range of functions.

A 12-speaker Bose surround sound system has been incorporated into the setup, amongst several other entertainment amenities. Further fancy features of our Deluxe model included an impressive head-up display, satellite navigation, wireless charging and an advanced air purifier system.

Peak Performance & Safety

The new HS5 houses a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-charged, direct injection engine, coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain proved to pack plenty of verve.

Delivering 253hp and 380Nm of torque, we accelerated this 2025 model from 0-100km/h in a respectable 7.7 seconds. We found this forward-wheel drive to deliver a competent and capable driving experience, with both suspension and braking systems providing everything required for a safe and controlled journey. An array of safety and driver assistance features has also been included to ensure the well-being of all occupants. These include but are not limited to, a tyre pressure monitoring system, hill descent control, a forward collision warning system, an active braking system, a blind spot monitoring system, rear collision warning, a reverse cross-traffic alert system, a lane departure warning system, a lane keeping assist system and airbags throughout the vehicle, amongst others.

Our Verdict

HONGQI continues to level up with every new premium offering it produces. These cars are creating a global reputation of being amongst the very finest available on the market today. ✤
