OUT OF THE BOX

What’s behind A Box of Goodness?

Started by Sri Lankan Malay, Miranthi (Miro) Dole, in October 2016, the organisation began as a simple exercise to create the habit of giving. People were encouraged to use a box and keep adding one item to it daily; so, at the end of a month, they had a box of goodness to donate to someone in need.

The initiative has grown in leaps and bounds and helps various local charities such as Al Sanabel Orphan Care Society and Bahrain Association for the Parents & Friends of the Disabled.

Since the onset of the pandemic, with many businesses shut down and workers left without income, A Box of Goodness has been carrying out a Food Drive to help those affected, as much as possible. Miro says: “Currently we are collecting dry non-perishable food items for our annual Ramadan Food Drive.

The food collected will be shared with needy local and expat families and individuals observing the fast, during the Holy Month of Ramadan. The food items can be dropped off to our collection point in Sanabis and the food is then packaged into larger boxes depending on the size of the family we will donate to. We will be collecting food donations until May 15.” The following food items are welcome: dates, rice, oil, all-purpose flour, salt, dhal, harees, jereesh, coconut milk powder, chickpeas, ghee, milk powder, tea, sugar, coffee, canned halal foods, pasta, noodles, green gram, other lentils, corn, sauces, etc.

Sanitary towels and diapers will also be accepted for inclusion in the food packs. A Box of Goodness is also currently distributing Mum & Baby Essentials packages for first-time mums in the Kingdom. These include essentials such as nursing bras and pads and baby items, including newborn diapers, infant formula, milk bottles, clothing, wet wipes and swaddle cloths. The aim is to ease the hardships of parents going through financial difficulties. ✤
