THE ALL-NEW MERCEDES-BENZ GLB

The GLB is an impressive new addition to the compact SUV segment.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, we at FACT Magazine love all things Mercedes-Benz! This globally renowned brand’s ability to produce beautifully crafted, high-performance models year after year has ensured its reputation as one of the very finest, premium motor vehicle manufacturers. Having had the privilege of test driving several Mercedes-Benz models over the past few years, including the classy AMG-GLC 43 Coupé, the compact A-Class Sedan and the 2021 GLA, we can attest to the quality of this manufacturer’s automobile offerings. This month, thanks once again to the great team at Al Haddad Motors, we received the opportunity to get behind the wheel of another beautiful Benz, this time in the form of the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLB 200.

Staring at the GLB head on, we were immediately struck by the aggressive appearance of the upright front end. Powerful proportions accentuate the off-road capabilities of this compact SUV as do the prominent headlamps and short overhangs at both the front and the back. The robustly contoured shoulder of the vehicle demands one’s attention when taking in the flanks and it’s obvious that ease of access is increased thanks to the doors extending over the side bar. This feature also aids in keeping soil out of the vehicle when on off-road adventures as well as increases protection for passengers in the event of a side impact. Further highlighting the off-road nature of the GLB are the allround protective claddings and simulated under-ride guard at the front and rear.

Further stylish features of this vehicle include the standard 18-inch alloy wheels and elevated roof rails made of polished aluminium. If you are interested in acquiring the optional OffRoad Engineering package, additional multibeam LED headlamps, an extra drive mode as well as a special media display to judge manoeuvrability more effectively, are all included. Once inside the car, we were immediately impressed by the amount of space on offer. Available as both a five- or seven-seater, the GLB is the first compact vehicle from Mercedes-Benz to offer a third row of seating.

The seats are exceptionally comfortable with both the electrically adjustable driver’s seat as well as the power front passenger seat containing memory function. The interior receives plenty of natural light thanks to the windows and panoramic sliding sunroof, illuminating the quality materials, fine craftmanship and attention to detail. There are plenty of storage compartments, cup holders and USB ports throughout as well as ample head, shoulder and leg room for all passengers. The robust character of this SUV has been integrated into the interior with the instrument panel having been constructed from a single piece with optical cut-outs in the driver and front passenger area. Aluminium looking, off-road tubular elements round off the lower section of the instrument panel which houses three round centre air vents. Underneath the vents sits the air conditioning panel whose buttons create the impression that they have been constructed from a solid aluminium cylinder.

The GLB 200 comes equipped with MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience). This interactive system includes as standard two seven-inch displays, one for the touchscreen media display and one for the instrument cluster. The sports steering wheel houses Touch Control buttons on both sides providing the driver with easier access to the system’s features. The remarkable computer powering this setup provides exceptional screen and graphic quality, a presentation that can be personalised, a fullcolour head-up display, navigation with augmented reality, learning software and voice control. It also comes complete with smartphone integration and is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

“Available as both a five or sevenseater, the GLB is the first compact vehicle from Mercedes-Benz to offer a third row of seating.”

Once out on the roads, it was obvious how responsive and capable this vehicle is. The GLB 200 is powered by the M 282, a four cylinder petrol engine with a displacement of 1.33 litres. It has a rated output of 163hp or 122kW and produces 250Nm of torque. This SUV has a top speed of 207km/h and can accelerate from 0–100km/h in 9.1 seconds. We found the handling, cornering, braking and suspension to be excellent and thoroughly enjoyed the entire journey. The GLB can be optionally equipped with the Off-Road Engineering Package as well as with 4Matic allwheel drive, both of which add substantially to the vehicle’s already impressive capabilities. With an array of safety features and driver assistance systems, Mercedes-Benz have once again ensured a safe experience for you and your loved ones. ✤
