The Last Lap

Are you ready for the final race of the F1 season that’s taking place in Abu Dhabi on December 8?

With the Drivers’ Championship already decided, after Max Verstappen came home in fifth place at Las Vegas to clinch his fourth title, it’s still all to drive for in the Constructors’ battle, with Bahrain owned McLaren in the lead with 608 points and Ferrari coming a close second with 584.

The Red Bulls could still come up from third place but, as we went to press, just before the Qatar race, it was looking increasingly unlikely. So, we could still be in for a good old, Gulf-style celebration in Abu Dhabi.

Taking place over 58 laps at the Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island, the big race kicks off at 4pm local time on Sunday, December 8, with qualifying on December 7 and three practice sessions running over December 6 and 7.

It’s reasonable to expect another good performance from Max Verstappen, who holds the track’s race lap record at 1:26.103, set during the very contentious 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, during which the Dutchman pipped Lewis Hamilton to that year’s Championship title, which would have been a record-breaking eighth championship for the Brit.

However, Britain’s Lando Norris, who has been chasing Max in the latter part of the season, also has a good record at Yas, having taken the second fastest lap at 1:28.391 in the 2022 race. And this year’s cars are averaging around a second faster, so it’s possible the track record could be broken.

The Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend will also include the season finales of the Formula 2 and F1 Academy series, which both promise exciting on-track action. And, for fans of two-wheeled racing, Thursday December 5 will see the Etihad Arena hosting the adrenaline-fuelled season finale of the FIM World Supercross Championship.

If that wasn’t enough, there’s some seriously impressive off-track entertainment in store with Teddy Swims and South Korean DJ Peggy Gou taking to the stage in the Yasalam After-Race Concert at Etihad Park on December 5, Maroon 5 on December 6, Eminem on December 7 and Muse on December 8.

Elsewhere the Yasalam Official After-Party – Afterlife is making its Abu Dhabi debut on December 6 at Yas Gateway Park, promising a unique show with Tale Of Us featuring Layla Benitez, Rebūke and Cassian, as well as special performances.

And you can expect a spectacular fireworks display to round out the race weekend.✤
