We at Fact Magazine were privileged to be invited by the great team at Euro Motors to thoroughly inspect and test drive the new 2020 BMW Z4 M40i Roadster.
Our initial reaction to the exterior of this BMW was to smile broadly and to simply nod our heads at one another in approval for the first couple of minutes. The Z4 is one of those cars whose mere presence makes you ache to get behind the wheel and out onto the tarmac. The Z4 was completely redesigned last year, made obvious by the replacement of the retractable hardtop by a more traditional folding soft top. The standard LED headlights are positioned in a vertical arrangement at the outer edges of the front end. The BMW kidney grille boasts a new mesh design that is very appealing to the eye. This is complimented by the wide bonnet complete with prominent contour lines that bestrides the wheel arches. The large Air Breathers mark the beginning of the lines and contours that flow along the flanks, whilst 19-inch high-performance tyres add to the vehicle’s athletic presence.
The powerful and sculptured design of the rear end of the car features a beautifully integrated spoiler, diffuser and shapely LED lights. As soon as we slipped into the interior, it was obvious to us that the master designers at BMW had gone all-out for this latest model Z4. The supportive and comfortable Vernasca leather seats warmly welcome bodies into the vehicle and the room on offer is more than you would expect from the outside. This feeling of space is drastically increased when the fabric soft-top is opened (and closed) within 10 seconds, at the push of a button. This maneuverer can be performed at speeds of up to 50km/h.
The M40i has a luxury leather and Alcantara interior fitted as standard, with all materials, trimmings and finishes showcasing the first-class standard this vehicle was designed to represent. With several storage bins in the cabin, a netted shelf behind the seats and two large cup holders up front, stowing goods has never been easier in a sports car. In fact, the boot now provides a 281-litre storage capacity, with the soft top up or down. This is a 50% improvement on the previous model.
Technology wise, the new Z4 M40i comes equipped with the intuitive and intelligent BMW Operating System 7.0. A 10.25-inch touchscreen is installed as standard, along with navigation and Apple CarPlay integration. The latest version of BMW’s iDrive system provides clear graphics and is very user friendly. This system can be controlled via voice commands, or by using a button/knob combination on the central console. Other great features include the Colour BMW Head-Up Display, Harman Kardon Surround Sound System as well as the two-zone automatic climate control and ambient lighting.
Once we were finally out on the roads, we took great pleasure in the sound of the 382 hp, 3.0-litre, twin turbocharged engine. This engine produces 369 lb-feet of torque and we soon found our bodies pressed hard against our seats as the M40i surged from zero – 100km/h in just 4.5 seconds. This is faster than the Porsche Boxster S. With a top speed of 268 km/h, this vehicle has plenty of power on offer. The eight-speed automatic transmission ensures fast and efficient shifting, providing a very smooth driving experience. With various driving modes available, precise steering, fantastic traction control, M Sport breaks, Adaptive Sport suspension and many other high-end performance features, this is one amazing car to drive.
Along with all of the above-mentioned components, safety features have been at the forefront of the Z4’s design. These include Lane Departure Warning, Collision & Pedestrian Warning with City Breaking function as standard. Additional options include: Lane Change Warning System, Rear Collision Prevention, Parking Assistant and many more.
