FACT was pleased to see that Volvo continue to produce models that uphold their sterling reputation.

Over the years, Volvo have firmly established a reputation for manufacturing stylish vehicles that are both safety- and comfort-oriented. The company is also renowned for producing cars equipped with premium features, usually reserved for models with a far higher price tag.

This month, thanks to the team at Volvo Bahrain, FACT had the opportunity to test drive the 2023 Volvo S60 mild hybrid; a modern and practical saloon featuring several upgrades, along with the expected array of safety and driver assistance features.

Exterior

With numerous improvements in design, the master craftsmen and women at Volvo have ensured this four-door, mid-sized saloon looks great from every angle. The first upgrade to grab our attention was the new, dark-themed front grille design, flanked by the distinctive, brand-specific Thor’s-hammer LED headlights. This combination is further complemented by the inclusion of a newly designed front bumper.

At the sides, the concave surfaces of the doors catch light, showcasing the powerful yet graceful lines of the body. Although our model included 18-inch alloy wheels, we were informed that a full range of high-end wheel designs and sizes is available for the 2023 model.

At the rear, the deck-lid spoiler sits above the updated rear bumper, with large, C-shaped LED taillights providing a further touch of class. Finishing off the exterior in style are the hidden end pipes that hint at the S60’s on-road performance capabilities.

Interior

Once inside the new S60, the classic Scandinavian refinement and minimalist perfection the brand is so well-known for, was on full display. Everything about the interior seemed practical in nature, functional in design and elegant in its makeup.

Welcomed by power-adjustable front seats, complete with side and lumbar support, we couldn’t have had a more comfortable vantage point from which to take in the pristine interior layout. From the upholstery, to the trimmings, to the finishes, Volvo have made sure that every material used in the construction of the interior is of a premium quality. This includes the tasteful aluminium metal mesh inlays located throughout the vehicle.

Boasting class-leading legroom, along with ample headroom, up to three passengers can sit comfortably in the back. Adding to the sense of space is the panoramic sunroof that allows an abundance of natural light into the cabin. The practical nature of the car is enhanced by the ample luggage compartment that provides 442 litres of storage capacity.

Technology & Infotainment

Ensuring a far healthier air quality and a major reduction in pollen and pollution levels is the advanced air purifier system that prevents hazardous particles from entering the cabin. One of our favourite features of the S60 was the updated infotainment system that now comes with built-in Google apps and services. We found this user-friendly system to be one of the most convenient, responsive and intuitive setups we have encountered. This nextgeneration system houses a 12.3-inch driver display that features high quality graphics and offers unparalleled connectivity.

Safety & Driver Assistance

When one drives in a Volvo, they can rest assured that they are travelling in a car designed by one of the most safety-conscious brands on the market. The new S60 is no exception. Volvo have equipped this updated model with their latest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) sensor platform. This modern and scalable active safety system consists of an assortment of cameras, radars and ultrasonic sensors.

Thanks to this advanced platform, the new S60 can intelligently detect the actions of other road users and apply automatic braking and collision avoidance. This assistance includes collision mitigation support, lane keeping assist, pilot assist, park assist, hill start assist and cruise control. The 2023 model also features front, side and knee airbags.

Power & Performance

The latest S60 is powered by a capable B4, 2.0-litre, Turbo, Mild Hybrid petrol engine that produces 197hp. Travelling in this smooth-sailing saloon, we appreciated the feeling of security and refinement that is synonymous with the Volvo brand. In fact, we found every aspect of the S60’s performance to be responsive, well-balanced and precise. Thanks to the new chassis system, advanced braking capabilities and ample power on offer, we always felt in complete control of the driving experience. Furthermore, this mild hybrid variant of the S60 offers up to 15% fuel savings and emission reductions in real-world driving.

Our Verdict

Volvo have produced yet another outstanding model, one equipped with all the necessary features to ensure the safest, most comfortable and responsive driving experience possible. ✤
