What We’re (Still) Talking About

Harry and Meghan’s Baby

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, otherwise known as Britain’s Prince Harry and his American wife Meghan Markle, have announced that they’re expecting a second child. Great news? You’d think so, right? But though the initial statement was welcomed by international media, it wasn’t long before the couple were being accused of overshadowing news of the birth of his cousin Princess Eugenie’s first child.

There were even snide remarks about their choice of photograph to accompany the news – reportedly chosen to highlight their joy at a, so far, healthy pregnancy following an earlier miscarriage. Move on a few days and it’s further reported that the pair have been stripped of their royal patronages, a move that would have been particularly painful to Prince Harry since it included several honorary military titles much cherished by the former soldier. Again, the mainstream media gloated. Is it just us or does their decision to step away from royal duties make more sense than ever?

Captain Tom’s funeral

We recently said farewell to Captain Sir Tom Moore, the 100-year-old British former WWII serviceman who won hearts around the world. In April last year, in the run up to his 100th birthday and at the start of the pandemic, he began walking lengths of his garden, with his frame, aiming to raise £1,000 for the UK’s National Health Service. Word of his quest got out and he became a national and then international hero, far surpassing his original goal – in fact, he actually raised around £39 million!

In recognition of his achievement, he was personally knighted by Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle. Unfortunately though, in February, he was hospitalised with pneumonia and then tested positive for Covid-19. He died on February 2. But, even in death, this super senior is still raising spirits with the news from his family that he requested his headstone should bear the words ‘I told you I was old’ in tribute to one of his favourite comedians, the late great Spike Milligan, whose own epitaph reads ‘I told you I was sick’. Sadly, they don’t make them like that any more.

Beans on…Bix?

Beans, beans are good for your heart… we all know the rest of the rhyme, right? We also all know that baked beans, especially those from Heinz, have their allotted place in the world and that’s on toast, right? So, it’s no surprise that indignation, nay fury, and not a little disgust erupted across the Twittersphere at a suggestion that beans should be served on Weetabix biscuits!

What the actual? Weetabix itself was responsible for the Tweet which claimed: “Why should bread have all the fun, when there’s Weetabix? Serving up Beanz on bix for breakfast with a twist. #ItHasToBeHeinz #HaveYouHadYourWeetabix”. And, not surprisingly, the response was swift and brutal. Our favourite came from the diplomatic quarter with the US Embassy in London posting: “This is not the US-UK collaboration we were hoping for…” only for the British Embassy in Washington to clap back with: “Strong opinion from the nation that makes tea in a microwave.” Love it. What’s the strangest food combination you’ve come across?
