ON HER HIGHNESS’S SERVICE

The call has gone out for entries to this year’s Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al-Khalifa’s Global Award for Women’s Empowerment.

In a partnership between UN Women, the global champion for gender equality, working to develop and uphold standards and create an environment in which every woman and girl can thrive, and the Kingdom of Bahrain, through the Supreme Council for Women, the second round of Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa’s Global Award for Women’s Empowerment was launched during a virtual event, the Generation Equality Forum.

The Award aims to demonstrate the impact of the efforts and contributions of governments, companies, civil society organisations and individuals in empowering women and girls around the world. The international commitment to the award not only confirms the support to global efforts towards enhancing the status of women, but also contributes directly to achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, particularly gender balance and equal opportunities.

The Award also focuses on highlighting efforts that achieve justice in equal opportunities between women and men in public life; show appreciation to institutional and individual efforts, initiatives and projects that target mainstreaming women’s needs; and foster community endeavors drawing on local experiences, talent, and creativity to reinforce the empowerment of women and the socio-economic security of women and their families.

Winners of the inaugural award in 2019 were: Abu Dhabi Police Force of the UAE for the ‘Empowering Women for a Secure Society’ initiative which was launched in 2016 to support and empower policewomen at the local, regional and global levels; Mahila Sahayatra Microfinance Bittiya Sanstha Ltd. of Nepal, for its Microfinance and Enterprise Development Service (EDS) programme created to empower disadvantaged women; Sustainable Development for All Kenya, for the ‘Use Solar Save Lives’ programme initiated to increase access to clean and affordable energy in rural communities to help families benefit from sustainable development; and Dr Kalpana Sankar of India. She is the Chairperson and Managing Trustee of Hand in Hand India. Her initiative aims to provide digital and financial services to facilitate the livelihood activities of Indian women entrepreneurs.

The announcement of the award was held during the Generation Equality Forum, hosted by the Government of France and co-organised with the Government of Mexico, under the supervision of UN Women. ✤
