Black Coffee, renowned Afro house superstar DJ and Drake collaborator, is coming to Bahrain.

Get ready to dance the night away as Grammy Award-winning South African DJ and producer Black Coffee performs for the first time in the Kingdom. The electrifying event will take place on December 17 at Azul Beach Bahrain.

Born Nkosinathi Maphumulo, in Durban, he grew up in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. On the day of Nelson Mandela’s release from Robben Island, he was among the dozens of people that were run down by a taxi driver in a politically motivated attack, which led to him losing the use of his left arm.

Not one to let that hold him back, Maphumulo focused his efforts heavily on music and moved back to Durban to study jazz. He dropped out before completing his course, but, along with two of his friends, became a backing singer for acclaimed folk blues guitarist, Madala Kunene, before going on to form the soul pop trio Shana. At the same time, he continued learning electronic music production and DJing with one hand. In 2003, he was accepted into the Red Bull Music Academy, which jump-started his career.

In 2005, Black Coffee released his self-titled debut album that paired smooth deep house music with gently swinging drums. Over the next decade, he released four more albums – Have Another One (2007), Home Brewed (2009), the epic three-disc Africa Rising (2012) and Pieces of Me (2015). Each showcasing his developing production style and musical sophistication.

Over the last two decades, Black Coffee has established himself as one of the most prominent global names in electronic music, bringing his South African roots to the world stage, with a blend of heavily traditional African percussion and distinctively metropolitan techno, dubbed by many as ‘Afropolitan House’.

In 2022, he won a Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album for Subconsciously (2021), and then went on to perform two incredible sets on Coachella’s Sahara stage.

Most recently, Black Coffee executive produced Drake’s seventh studio album Honestly, Nevermind.

In recent years, Bahrain has seen a rise in the number of top-class event venues, from the exhibition centre and amphitheatre to beachside spaces. Azul Beach Bahrain, where the Black Coffee concert will be hosted this month, is a popular hub for the island’s most happening events. Now that the weather has cooled down, it’s the ideal location to spend a weekend, unwinding at the cabanas or relaxing on the shores. A bar with spacious, shack-style seating is also available so you can elevate your beachside escapades with bites and drinks. Azul Beach Bahrain boasts beautiful views of the Kingdom’s skyline. During the day, the blue skies blend with the Arabian Sea, offering a breathtaking ambience and at night, star-lit skies and an illuminated skyline, along with a mood-lit bar, ensure the vibe remains the same – upbeat and fun! ✤
