OIL ON CANVAS

The newly opened Last Oil Well Gallery plays on words to highlight precious resources.

The art space, in Al Aali Mall, had its official launch a couple of weeks ago featuring works from across the spectrum and artists from Bahrain and beyond. And, in fact, it already represents more than 30 established and up-and-coming creatives, many of whom have been hit hard by the pandemic and welcome a new opportunity to exhibit.

Though the name seems foreboding of a dark future, owner and founder Frances (Fran) Stafford explains the dual meaning saying: “It came out of many weeks of discussions by a few collaborators and friends of the gallery – we were trying to find something that would pique the interest of the general audience yet resonate with the history of Bahrain. Because Bahrain was the first of the Gulf states to find oil and with this whole crisis, I thought it was an interesting take on an apocalyptic time where art production could act as the last hope. The ‘Oil’ became a play on words – obviously referencing oil paint, as well as the commodity that changed so much of this region’s identity.

“Many of our audience members have also said it makes them think of the treasures that may lie in that last well, and how we have to either protect what is still there or look to new solutions. “The last thing about the name is simply the fact that I am from an oil producing culture in Alberta, Canada, and I would like to see the gallery have a second home there one day.” Though she recognises the risk of opening during a global pandemic, Fran felt that, though there are many one-man galleries in Bahrain, there was a real need for a central display space showcasing works from several artists. And though The Last Oil Well does engage virtually, she adds: “I’m a believer that art should still be viewed in the flesh as well.”

For the future, she plans a full programme with a talk series from artists and curators, online workshops and lectures and more exhibitions with local, regional and international artists. As well as more development on the website, which is still in its infancy. ✤
